sha: the taste, texture, colour or scent?

For those who have been reading this blog for quite sometime, you might be thinking that Sha is going out of her mind. She is talking about period and pimples, about how tembam apam can be or even about farting. The truth is, I want to talk about something light but relevant to Ramadhan since most of us are busy choosing our raya shoes or changing our curtains:)

Raya is approaching us and most of us are baking kuih raya. I've seen the creative and outstanding outputs in most ladies' blogs and I'm wondering how a person can be so determined in baking kuih raya. I'm not in the habit of baking a kuih raya myself, because that is the only skill I don't acquire. Perhaps I'm too lazy to bake or I'm just simply not talented.

When we're choosing a kuih raya, there must be certain reasons on why we're choosing such kuih. And as years gone by, we might have our list of favourites.

For example...

7. I love Almond London because I like the crunchy taste of the almond in the middle -regardless whether it is small or large. But it stays at number 7 in my kuih raya chart as I prefer Batang Buruk than Almond London.

6. I love Batang Buruk because of the strange mung bean smell. The smoky smell is something you will never find in other kuih & the fragility of kuih Batang Buruk is somewhat a memory. When I was small, I used to throw it away because I couldn't eat Batang Buruk without ruining my mum's cushion which in the end resulting pinches on my body:) But the smell and the texture of Batang Buruk can never be compared with my preference to Kuih Bangkit.

5. The colour of a Kuih Bangkit is as white as a snow. The small cute flowers will tempt a little girl to choose the Kuih Bangkit over other kuihs in the jar. The fluffiness of a Kuih Bangkit, especially made by an old lady called nenek, wan, or tok using the traditional method is making the Kuih Bangkit special. But Kuih Bangkit's pureness will make it number 5 in the list because I will still choose Cornflake Madu over a Kuih Bangkit:)

4. Cornflakes used to be extravagant when I was small. The taste of honey which was covering the cornflakes made me want to steal my Mak Long's kuih from the kitchen. Cornflake Madu was at its prime at that time and even though I'm 27 this year, I'm still craving for Cornflakes Madu and I'm ordering 2 jars this year! But a Cornflake Madu is at number four of the chart because Bahulu will be at number 3.

3. Bahulu is something unique. It's not a cookie yet it's not a bread. What is it? I don't know. But I do know that I like Bahulu. And I like it more than Cornflake Madu but lesser than Tat Nanas.

2. Tat Nanas is a must! The sweetness of the pineapple, the buttery smell on the crumbs are something that I can never forget! I used to stay in the kitchen, and looked at my aunty who would patiently put on the jam on the pastry. I would never be that patient and I'm not very patient in savouring all of the tarts either. But Tat Nanas stays at number 2.

1. I was thinking about making one of these kuihs fall at number 2 so that I have Top 8 instead of Top 7. Unfortunately, I am still dwelling these 2 types of kuih - Semperit and Biskut Makmur. Both are on my top list because these two will always make me smile when I eat them and I'm most likely going to hunt for these kuihs when I'm going to open houses! (butter and ghee will always taste nice to me. That's why I'm fat!)

So, watch out to those who are inviting me to your open houses. This is my top 7/8 kuih raya list. If you find any empty jars of these kuihs, it might be because of me:)

I like the classics better than any other.

akak paling suka almond london juga...biskut mazola pun suka gak...

aku berminat nak buat kuih raya tapi mengenangkan kekanak kat rumah yg suka menyebok tu baik batalkan saja niat.
Feveret aku biskut makmur ngan rempeyek.

huhu tart nenas..my all time favourite :D..huhu..kuih semperit pn sedap..biskut cornflakes tu...huhu byk lgla yg sedap2..almond london..huhu wahhh sedapppnye :D

banyak-banyak kuih raya, tart nenas and almond london. kuih lain memang tak terusik lah. so, saya ada top 2 je. hehehe...
